Something for interface geeks.
One of our current project developments makes use of gesture based controls to illustrate how a surgeon might control an interface - in mid operation or during treatment - purely by gesture rather than direct control of the device (which would compromise sterile control in a surgery environment). It was while I was exploring gesture based controls I came across this comprehensive post on the related question of open standards for sign language.
This is potentially significant in order that signing could be interpreted by computers, instructions might be followed or say automatically translated into spoken language and vice versa. Given the challenges for computer scientists of interpreting the spoken word consistently, the issues of standardising and then enabling systems to correctly interprete gestures must be huge.
